New World Graphics Card Issues

New World is apparently killing more RTX 30 Series graphics cards

Something festers at the root of this issue.

The last thing Amazon probably wants to hear about right now is more talk regarding New World killing graphics cards. However, that’s exactly what users are reporting yet again. And not just from the few that missed the original story and jumped in with faulty units. It appears more RTX 30 Series graphics cards aside from EVGA 3090s are having issues with the release build of New World. Here’s what we know about the situation.

During the beta period for New World back in July, issues first cropped up where EVGA RTX 3090 owners reported that the game had bricked their graphics cards. Given that graphics cards are such valuable pieces of hardware at the moment, particularly RTX 3090s, this caused a lot of panic and negative press for the game. Amazon quickly stated that it was not at fault for the issues, while simultaneously trying to slip in a patch to address the alleged root cause of the issue. This was tied to uncapped framerates in the menu screen which caused GPUs to induce full load and somehow fail as a result.

This seems like something that built-in hardware failsafes would address, and GPUs should be capable of withstanding more than 100% usage. To further complicate matters, EVGA has already stepped up and claimed responsibility for poor soldering workmanship on a small batch of early-production RTX 3090s. At the same time, tech YouTuber JayzTwoCents tested his own EVGA RTX 3090 and was unable to find anything unusual about the game.

New World graphics card issues

We find ourselves in a new pickle

Now that Amazon has fully released the game, it seems within reason that it would have only done so with the confidence that its game was not the culprit of the issue. Yet here we are with more graphics card models experiencing issues in New World than before. German media outlet WinFuture experienced a failure with its Gigabyte RTX 3090, while other users on Reddit reported failures for RTX 3080 and RTX 3080 Ti models. Part of that surely has to do with the massively larger sample size from the current player population, but it doesn’t point to a clear solution yet.

We can’t say with certainty whether the problem is with New World itself or if the game simply exposed manufacturing flaws in AIB model RTX 30 Series graphics cards. It will be interesting to see if any Founder’s Edition models suffer failures, since Nvidia typically overdesigns those to be stout, whereas AIBs deviate from the reference models with modified designs. Whatever the case may be, it’s important to wait for the facts to emerge. If you want to play it safe for now, you might just hold off on playing New World until more is made clear.
