bloober team new layers of fear unreal engine 5 teaser

Bloober Team is teasing a new Layers of Fear project, which uses Unreal Engine 5

Fresh coat of paint.

Horror game developer Bloober Team sure has been busy. Since the original Layers of Fear in 2016, the company has released four new games. Its latest was The Medium, a psychological horror game the aped classic titles in the genre like Silent Hill. It was released just last year, but Bloober is already working on something new. Well, to be fair, it’s actually going back to the canvas. The developer has teased a new Layers of Fear project, releasing a trailer showing off some neat Unreal Engine 5-powered paint physics.

Bloober Team appears to be going back — I mean way back — to the start of its horror roots. The teaser clearly shows that the new project is related to the first game. In fact, if I didn’t know any better, I’d assume that the new Layers of Fear project is some kind of remaster or remake as opposed to a sequel. The first game put you in the uncomfortable role of a haunted painter, who wandered through the shifting, macabre hallways of his mansion searching for his lost wife. Naturally, as this is Bloober, not all was what it seemed. I won’t spoil anything, of course. Mostly because I played and beat the game and still didn’t know what the hell happened.

The teaser for the new Layers of Fear project does add some credence to my remaster/remake theory. It alludes that you’re back in the old painter’s shoes. But the trailer also includes whispers from unseen people, telling him to “go back” and “finish what you started.” It ends with the line: “Your fear will return.”

Or maybe it’s about an ogre

That fear, by the way, won’t return until next year. The teaser trailer ends by confirming a release some time in 2022. That seems early, considering The Medium came out not long ago. But Bloober Team did release both Layers of Fear 2 and Blair Witch in the same year (2019), so project management doesn’t seem to be a huge concern.

Regardless, I am eager to see what Bloober has cooking up for the next Layers of Fear. Will it be a remake using the Unreal 5 Engine? It just might. Mystery is a major theme within the developer’s games, so it makes sense that this recent teaser will leave us guessing for a while.
