Up to this point, French publisher and developer Dotemu has largely worked on gaming IPs that had their start in either the 1980s and 1990s. Because of this, Dotemu has earned a solid reputation as a major contributor to the ever-growing prevalence of quality retro gaming revivals, especially with recent projects like Streets of Rage 4. These days, however, Dotemu wishes to branch out and work on game adaptations of popular films. Specifically, The Terminator, Conan the Barbarian, and other action movies from the 1980s and 1990s. This news came from a recent conversation that Dotemu CEO Cyrille Imbert had with IGN.
According to Imbert, he has thought of making games based on franchises “that never really had their very cool retro game back in the days.” He acknowledged the shoddy reputation of licensed video games, saying the ones that did exist for movies like Indiana Jones and The Terminator tended to serve as “promotional games” that lacked quality. Imbert is only brainstorming at this stage, but this potential direction shift would still align with Dotemu’s reputation for tapping into nostalgia.
What else did Imbert discuss?
Imbert also talked about the possibility of making games based on popular IPs from the 2000s. He noted that there exist “some games from the early 2000s with the first 3D games that have aged pretty badly, but they’re still awesome games, so I think there’s a lot of potential.” Although Imbert stated that “it will take a bit of time” before Dotemu decides to work on properties from the 2000s, it would be a sensible direction for the company to take, especially since nostalgia for the 2000s is growing.
Imbert’s ideas about taking on classic action movies and even 2000s nostalgia certainly sound interesting. And Dotemu could absolutely do these properties justice considering its solid track record. Fans of Dotemu and its work now have all the more reason to keep tuning in to whatever news the company puts out there.
