AMD launches FidelityFX Super Resolution with support for select games

DLSS has got competition.

With all the talk about DLSS coming to several titles this month, AMD has just announced the launch of its own upscaling technology, FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR).

The upscaling technology works similarly to DLSS in terms of recreating images at a higher resolution to improve quality and framerates. However, FidelityFX Super Resolution is based on a spatial upscaling algorithm that does not utilize deep learning. In addition, a wide variety of GPUs support FSR. The list ranges from the Radeon 6000 series of graphics cards all the way down to the RX 400 series. AMD’s software will also be available on Nvidia’s older Pascal graphics cards. Since FidelityFX Super Resolution is an open-source technology, game developers will have access to it starting mid-July 2021 for free. This gives teams the ability to increase support for upcoming and released titles.

FidelityFX Super Resolution has four different modes to choose from — Ultra Quality, Quality, Balanced, and Performance. Like regular graphics settings in games, players can pick their preferred performance mode for upscaling. For example, Performance mode will improve performance by 2.4X on average at 4K resolution. The Ultra Quality mode should also produce images with a quality that is almost identical to that of native 4K resolution

FidelityFX Super Resolution to receive more supported titles.

At launch, there will be seven games that support FidelityFX Super Resolution including Anno 1800, Evil Genius 2, Godfall, and The Riftbreaker. AMD reassured gamers more games are coming to FSR in the near future as the list of supported titles expands in the coming months. The company stated that more than 40 game developers have agreed to support the upscaling technology in their games. Titles such as DOTA 2, Far Cry 6, and Resident Evil Village are also expected to have FSR support by the end of this year.
