Incorrect version of Dead Island released on Steam

This article is over 13 years old and may contain outdated information

Techland has confirmed that the version of Dead Island released in the US through Steam was an incorrect build and not the final release.
Players had been reporting a series of bizarre bugs and quirks which seemed to point towards the Steam build being developers debug code. The ability to enter a ‘noclip’ mode and float around through walls and enemies certainly seems to support this.
Others claim to have found the remains of code relating to the Xbox 360 submissions process lurking around in the guts of the Steam release.
On the game’s official Facebook page, Techland has stated “We deeply regret that an incorrect version of Dead Island was inadvertently made available to players on Steam launch in North America” and says that the proper version will be made available “ASAP”.
That isn’t going too smoothly either, with players reporting that a series of patches have deleted all saved game progress.
Unconfirmed reports from players posting in online forums also suggest that the same developer debug code may even have slipped out on PC retail copies.
In conjunction with the sizeable release-day patch, it’s fair to say that Dead Island hasn’t enjoyed the best of launches. Territories outside the US will receive the game on 9 September, so we’ll see how things go for them.
