AMD Ryzen 5000G APUs coming to retail this August

Dedicated ray tracing GPUs have been all the craze in recent times. However, AMD has other plans for the near future. During the company’s Computex 2021 keynote, AMD CEO Lisa Su revealed plans to bring two Ryzen 5000G APU models to retail later this year, making them available for custom PC builds.

The Ryzen 5000G family (codename Cezanne) of APUs initially released back in April and was exclusive to prebuilt systems and OEMs. During the keynote, AMD announced that the Ryzen 7 5700G and Ryzen 5 5600G will come to retail on August 5 this year.

The two Ryzen 5000G APUs will utilize the latest Zen 3 cores and Vega 8 integrated graphics instead of the newer RDNA 2 architecture. The Ryzen 7 5700G and Ryzen 5 5600G will both have 1080p gaming capabilities, which is usually unexpected for integrated graphics. During the presentation, the flagship Ryzen 7 5700G was able to reach 78 fps in Rogue Company on high graphical settings.

AMD’s Ryzen 5000G to outperform Intel

AMD even went as far as comparing its APU to Intel’s Core i7-11700. The Ryzen 7 5700G will offer more than two times the gaming performance in titles such as Fortnite and Warframe. AMD’s chip will also have up to 63% faster performance in content creation applications.

In terms of specs, the Ryzen 7 5700G will feature 8 cores and 16 threads with a base clock frequency of 3.8 GHz. It will also have 8 Radeon Vega CUs (compute units) that operate at 2 GHz. The Ryzen 5 5600G will come with 6 cores, a base frequency of 3.9 GHz, and 7 CUs at 1.9 GHz. These processors will work with 500-series motherboards and select 400-series models on a case-by-case basis. In addition, both APUs will have 24 lanes of PCIe 3.0 and won’t be PCIe 4.0 compatible, meaning you won’t be able to unlock the full speed of newer SSDs.

Despite the drawbacks, these AMD Ryzen 5000G APU variants will provide solid entry-level performance at an affordable price thanks to the combination of the CPU and GPU into one component for budget builds. The Ryzen 7 5700G and Ryzen 5 5600G will be available at retail on August 5 and cost $359 USD and $259 USD respectively.
