Everspace 2 guide: How to get to locked containers

I've always wanted a slightly better engine!

While exploring the systems in Everspace 2, you’ll often come across locked containers that require you to solve an environment puzzle to open them. While the game does an excellent job of explaining almost everything, it leaves these to you. This guide will break down some of the main roadblocks that stand between you and the quest for sweet loot. Locked containers will often have a little bit of everything in them, including new gear, currency, and healing items. The game is an RPG, so you’ll often be able to find things that are better than what you’ve currently got equipped.

You’ll often find locked containers in Everspace 2‘s side areas denoted with question marks. These pop up from time to time while you’re on your way to main missions or just exploring. They’re accessed just like everything else: zoom towards them while auto-traveling to enter them automatically. You’ll typically need to clear out all the outlaws first to search for the loot, but the on-screen objective will tell you to find the secret stash or something similar. Actually finding the containers is easy, as they’ll get marked on your screen simply by playing. Things get a bit trickier when it comes to accessing them.

The first thing to keep in mind when opening pathways to locked containers in Everspace 2 are batteries. The doors leading to the containers often require a battery to be inserted into a nearby outlet, so you’ll need to locate one. These too will be noted on your screen and all you need to do is fly over and grab one. Then simply fly to the socket and, if you’re close enough, it’ll automatically be seated. But sometimes there won’t be any batteries at all. Other areas will have energy spheres that last for a certain amount of time. You’ll typically need to turn on a generator to make the spheres, and then carry them to the outlet before the energy dissipates.

Power that door

The more initially confusing barrier is a literal one. Sometimes you’ll power a socket that only brings a device to life with a red light. Shooting the device will turn the light green, but only for a few seconds. And then it goes back to red. You already know where I’m going with this. A door opens during the time that the light is green and shuts once it turns red. What you’ll need to do is find the right spot to shoot the device while still being able to make it through the door before it closes. This is easier said than done, though, and will take a bit of trial and error before you’re able to successfully find a spot that works.

For many of these, you’re going to need to fly your craft into extremely small, narrow areas. But Everspace 2‘s controls are so tight that it won’t be a problem. Just keep an eye out for power cells, outlets, and shootable devices and you’ll be nabbing loot like nobody’s business. Just make sure you’ve got the inventory space to hold it all.
