After years of playing catch up with its main competition, AMD has seemingly achieved a major victory with its next-gen lineup of CPUs. According to a recent PassMark update, the company’s Ryzen 5 5600X CPU bests all Intel processors in single-thread performance.
That includes Intel’s top-level Core i9-10900K.
In PassMark’s latest results, the 5600X, which is the first of AMD’s new Zen 3 lineup to be listed, scored 3,495 points on its point scale. The aforementioned i9-10900K scored just 3,177 points in single-thread performance, which is roughly 10% lower. AMD’s last-gen Ryzen 5 3600X scored just 2833 points, which makes this 5600X almost 23% faster than its predecessor.
More AMD dominance to come?
Obviously, that’s just one of the four new CPUs coming from AMD. The Ryzen 7 5800X, Ryzen 9 5900X and Ryzen 9 5950X are all expected to be added to the rankings ahead of the upcoming launch. As of now, however, the 5600X is the only one with a PassMark single-thread ranking. It can be expected that the higher-level AMD CPUs will continue to break records though, as each subsequent processor features higher boost clock speeds than the 5600X.
Model | Cores/ Threads | TDP (Watts) | Boost/Base Freq (GHz) | Total Cache | Included Cooler | Price | Release Date
AMD Ryzen™ 9 5950X | 16C/32T | 105W | Up to 4.9 / 3.4 | 72MB | N/A | $799 | November 5, 2020
AMD Ryzen™ 9 5900X | 12C/24T | 105W | Up to 4.8 / 3.7 | 70MB | N/A | $549 | November 5, 2020
AMD Ryzen™ 7 5800X | 8C/16T | 105W | Up to 4.7 / 3.8 | 36MB | N/A | $449 | November 5, 2020
AMD Ryzen™ 5 5600X | 6C/12T | 65W | Up to 4.6 / 3.7 | 35MB | Wraith Stealth | $299 | November 5, 2020 |
AMD’s Zen 3 Ryzen processors are slated to launch on November 5. The Ryzen 5 5600X will be the cheapest offering from AMD at $299 and will feature six cores, 12 threads, and a 3.7 GHz base clock all at just 65W TDP. As you go up the line in CPU, prices will increase thanks to higher core counts, thread counts, and clock speeds.
Outside of the CPU sector, AMD appears to be making waves in its push for competitive, next generation graphics. The reveal event for the new Ryzen lineup teased the Big Navi GPU, which looks to be nearly as good as the Nvidia RTX 3080. More info on AMD’s new graphics will be revealed on October 28.
