The Cistern is one of the areas Tasi will find herself in as you continue your journey in Amnesia: Rebirth. It also has a puzzle involving wheels, hatches, a water tank, and, well, an actual tank. Here’s our guide to help you get out of the sewers.

Amnesia: Rebirth – The Cistern’s puzzles

Getting out of the tank

Exiting the tank which you were inside of at the end of Amnesia: Rebirth‘s Fortress level is, technically, the first puzzle in the Cistern.

The hatch is stuck and you can’t get out. Use the lever encircled in the image below and move your mouse to the left. This will rotate the tank’s opening allowing you to go outside.

Next, rotate the wheel to drain the water. Push the stone blocks away and enter the crawlspace.

The wheel and hatches puzzle

As you make your way further into the Amnesia: Rebirth‘s Cistern level, you’ll eventually encounter the wheel puzzle in the sewers. Take note of what each wheel does:

  • Left – Opens and closes the hatches.
  • Middle – Moves the water tank sideways.
  • Right – Raises the water tank.

Here are the steps to solve this puzzle in Amnesia: Rebirth‘s Cistern level:

  • Use the middle wheel so the water tank is between the two hatches.
  • Use the left wheel to open the hatches (seen below).

  • Walk gingerly across these objects and crawl inside the drainpipe to the right.
  • Go behind the hatch to the left and remove the obstacle blocking it.

  • Return to the wheel puzzle.
  • Use the middle wheel so the wooden beam that the water tank is attached to is aligned with the vertical indentation on the wall (seen below).

  • Next, use the wheel on the right to raise the water tank to its maximum height.
  • Let it go and immediately use the left-hand wheel to open the hatches and create a walkway.

With all that done, enter the drainpipe to the left and use the crawlspace to make your way to the top.

There’s a short sequence that’ll follow this part. It’s not a puzzle, but I’ll leave it to you to figure it out so as to avoid spoilers.

Still, if you get past the sewers and reach the end of the well-lit cavern, turn around so you’ll know which way to go.

After this, you’ll find yourself in the oasis. However, the next puzzle that awaits you in Amnesia: Rebirth is at the Laboratory level.
