Syndicate co-op is EA’s way of remembering the original

This article is over 13 years old and may contain outdated information

It’s a debate that’s going to go on forever: should classic games be remade in the vision of the original? Should they be remade at all? If you’re EA then you probably answer yes to the latter and largely no to the former. However, with Syndicate the memory of the 1993 title is (so we’re told) very much alive.
Apparently, that’s where co-op comes in; it features four players as well as weapons and locations lifted directly from the original.
Speaking to IncGamers, EA Partners’ Ben O’Donnell said:
“With co-op we’re trying to use that as a way of tipping our hat to the original, because it’s four player and squad based. Also, EuroCorp are back in there, the weaponry is similar and Atlantic Accelerator (a location in the original) is in there. For Atlantic Accelerator we literally took the top-down map from the original and made a 3D version of it.
“People that played the original will hopefully recognise much of this game as well.”
Is that enough to convince you that this new vision of Syndicate will bear any resemblance to the original. Having played the new Syndicate in co-op (our write up of that coming shortly) we were hard pressed to see much resemblance. Although, we didn’t play on Atlantic Accelerator…
Then again, I’m not one of those people that considers a move away from the original a bad thing in and of itself. So long as it’s good I’ll be happy.
