GTA V screenshots: Using images to analyse the trailer

This article is over 13 years old and may contain outdated information

Released earlier today, the GTA V trailer has gotten us all talking.  What we know is that the game (or at least some of it) is to be set in Los Santos, one of the three major cities that featured in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
Will San Andreas’ other two cities of San Fierro and Las Venturas also make an appearance? Possibly. Hopefully.
Going by the imagery of the trailer (key images have been picked out below), I think it’s safe to say that GTA V is setting out to bring us an experience closer to San Andreas than GTA IV – i.e. a massive open-world with plenty of ways to procrastinate between story missions.
The trailer showed a huge mountain, farm yards and various beach settings, all of which point to the inclusion of rural areas. Yep, rural areas like San Andreas. Then there’s the golf course, the jet ski, the wide range of urban environments and the area beyond Los Santos shown when the logo fades into screen.
You may also have noticed the couple of seconds depicting a guy nailing a ‘For Sale’ sign into his front yard. The meaning of this could possibly be two-fold, 1) that buying and selling of properties is set to return and 2) that the game will take place during the economic recession. Further, this would mean the game is likely to take place in a present day setting (a theory emphasised by the style of cars and dress on show).
If GTA V is indeed going down the do-whatever-the-hell-you-want route then I’m in full favour of it. While I enjoyed the hell out of GTA IV I missed the silly business building, house buying and gang warfare.
Just give me an ice cream truck I can use to sell cocaine out of and I’ll be satisfied.
