In the world of video games, what’s old will one day become new again. That’s exactly the case for the polygon-ridden Hotshot Racing. The racer is reminiscent of many of the arcade sprinters of the 90s, with boxy shapes and all. Developers Lucky Mountain Games and Sumo Nottingham have embraced that visual style, creating a vibrant dash with a splash of nostalgia. The wait is almost over as publisher Curve Digital has announced Hotshot Racing‘s release date for September 10.
Where the rubber meets the road
Racing fans will find familiarity in the Grand Prix and Time Trial modes. There are 16 circuits in total and feature desert landscapes in Las Vegas and coastal flybys. But, it seems there’s more to Hotshot Racing other than beating out a herd of AI bots to the finish line.
To add more substance to the experience, additional modes—like Cops and Robbers—will have you turning robbers into cops once caught. Others, like Drive or Explode, fits your ride with a bomb. If you drop below a certain speed, your car will go out in heap-o-flames a la the movie Speed. Heh, I don’t even mind dating myself with that reference.
Asphalt veterans
From the looks of it, the team(s) behind Hotshot Racing are no slouch when it comes to crafting road-hugging experiences. Veterans of Lucky Mountain Games and Sumo Nottingham have worked on titles like Outrun 2 and Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing Transformed. “This game has been on a massive journey for the past decade from the initial concepts to Kickstarter pitch and now on the final stretch to launch,” said creative director Trevor Ley of Lucky Mountain Games.
The development team also notes that it has plans to support Hotshot Racing with new content in the future. Ley goes on to say, “We have plans for this game past launch as well, so it’ll be great to see what the world thinks of the game post-September 10th.”
Hotshot Racing releases on September 10, 2020, for $19.99 USD on Steam. The full, and rather modest, system requirements can be seen below. This is important as the developer has made promises of a 60FPS experience across all platforms in its single player experience.
