In F1 2020‘s Driver Career or MyCareer mode, you get to select the Formula One team that you’ll join. This is the traditional career mode that’s been part of the series, and quite different from the all-new MyTeam mode where you’re both the driver and owner of a team. Since you don’t own the organization, there are a few expectations that you need to meet. This mini-guide will help you select the best Formula One team to join for the 2020 season.

F1 2020: Driver Career – The best Formula One team for you
Starting out
In F1 2020‘s Driver Career mode, you can decide to jump straight to a Formula One season or, alternatively, focus on Formula 2 first. You can have a short taster (with only three races), half a season, or even the entire season if need be.
Once you’ve finished your Formula 2 stint, that’s when you’ll graduate to the pinnacle of motorsports racing. It’s up to you to pick a world-class organization now.
Here are some decent options if you’re just starting out:
- Williams Racing: Be consistent
- Haas F1 Team: Lots of points
Of the two, Williams Racing will be your ideal choice if you’re very new to the world of Formula One and F1 2020. Their only expectation is that you should “be consistent” which, at the very least, means finishing a race and slowly progressing. Haas, meanwhile, require you to earn a few points in placements.
Middle of the pack
- Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN: Score regular points
- BWT Racing Point F1 Team: Push for podiums
- Scuderia AlphaTauri Honda: Control the midfield
- Renault DP World F1 Team: Develop and compete
All four squads require you to forge a path ahead and lead the middle pack of Formula One teams. Renault seems to have a more, shall we say, “beginner-friendly” attitude since they simply want you to “develop and compete.” Of course, that should still mean that you’re continuously providing a good showing in F1 2020‘s Career Mode.
Before the final summit
- McLaren F1 Team: Fight and win
Later, you could choose to jump ahead to any of the “big three” teams in F1 2020. Alternatively, you could try your hand at joining McLaren. The info suggests that you should deliver from the first race onwards. This doesn’t mean winning all the time. It just means you should be competitive enough to in reaching the front of the field of competitors.
The top of the mountain
- Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team: Lead the field
- Aston Martin Red Bull Racing: Compete at the front
- Scuderia Ferrari: Fight for the championship
F1 2020‘s “big three” teams are Mercedes, Aston Martin Red Bull, and Ferrari, and with good reason. These three teams will expect only the best of the best, requiring you to win races and lead the pack often. Finishing at the bottom (or not finishing at all) will likely lead to management questioning your capabilities. Select any of these teams only once you’re confident in your abilities in F1 2020, and make the most out of your eventual superstardom.
My suggestions and other tidbits as you progress
As mentioned earlier, you can’t go wrong with joining Williams if it’s your first time playing F1 2020. It just leads to a more casual approach in F1 2020‘s Career Mode. If you want to take things up a notch, though, I’d suggest picking Alfa Romeo. The team only requires you to earn points and reach the middle-tier of the driver standings, not necessarily win a lot of podiums. Plus, the car’s performance and speed will be noticeably better than Haas’ or Williams’ offerings.
After selecting your F1 2020 Driver Career organization for the season, you also get to choose who your teammate will be.
Don’t forget that you can improve your own character’s stats via Contracts -> Driver Perks. However, very much unlike F1 2020‘s MyTeam mode, you won’t have any input when it comes to sponsors/cash inflows, facility upgrades, or your teammate’s stats.
Once your contract expires, you’re free to renegotiate a new contract with the same team or move on to greener (and more challenging) pastures.
F1 2020 is available via Steam. The standard edition releases on July 10. However, the Deluxe Schumacher Edition allows players to start racing on July 7. For more information, check out our guides and features hub.
