Steam’s stats for 2011 are impressive

Valve has released a few pieces of statistical information about how Steam performed in 2011, and it’s no huge surprise to learn that the most popular digital download platform has done rather well for itself. Sales numbers for 2011 are more than double what they were in 2010; though it’s not entirely clear if that’s double the revenue or double the number of games sold. Not bad either way.
This year, the Steam platform grew to house more than 1,800 games and 40 million accounts (which also resulted in Valve having to double Steam’s service capacity). During the most recent Christmas and New Year sale, Steam users peaked at more than five million.
“Steam and Steamworks continues to evolve to keep up with customer and developer demands for new services and content,” said Valve president Gabe Newell, barely audible from behind the gigantic pile of money.
“Looking forward, we are preparing for the launch of the Big Picture UI mode, which will allow gamers to experience Steam on large displays and in more rooms of the house,” he added.
