For years, the Saints Row franchise has been a go-to favorite for fans of open-world games, with just the right mixture of action and silliness. However, one game has been a sore spot with PC fans for years — Saints Row 2. Since its release in 2008, the game has been rendered unplayable for the most part, due to bugs and lack of updates. As a result, it hasn’t been able to run smoothly on modern hardware without mods. But surprisingly enough, developer Volition is finally changing that.

What are the details?

During a stream today on its Twitch channel, Volition revealed it had managed to find the missing code for Saints Row 2 that will provide the basis for making the game properly playable on Steam again. A two-person team has been given the task of using the code to get the game up and running again.

The company noted that the new build will work through Steamworks as opposed to Gamespy for obvious reasons. In addition, the Ultor Exposed and Corporate Warfare downloadable content will be available as well.

That said, because of the small amount of team members working on the game, it is anyone’s guess when this update will actually become available. But in the meantime, fans can enjoy other Saints Row games. And since only a couple of Volition’s crew are working on the patch, that probably means the rest are busy working on the next full Saints Row. We’ll have to see what next year brings.

Complaints may still be pouring in from those who want to play Saints Row 2. But it’s nice to see the developer acknowledge a fix, so players can enjoy the classic that it is.

Saints Row 2 is also available for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in more playable form. It’s backward compatible on the Xbox One as well.
