It seems that there is no shortage of games getting modern facelifts. The Grandia franchise will soon see that very same treatment, as both the original Grandia and Grandia II are receiving modern updates. Both will drop on PC via Steam come Oct 15. However, there is much more here than just reskinning the base game with modern graphics.
What’s old is definitely new again
You can take a look at any one of the recent modern remakes for other franchises and realize that there’s more going on than just making a shiny thing shinier. The best example of this comes in the form of the Resident Evil 2 remake – though, that was much more of a reimagining than a traditional remake.
Still, it would have been easy to simply put a new coat of paint on Resident Evil 2 and call it a day. It seems a similar philosophy will also provide the groundwork for the Grandia HD Remaster and Grandia II Remaster.
Prettying up the place
When it comes to the Grandia HD Remaster, there are a few things you can expect to see in the upgrade. For starters, new enhancements to the user interface and character sprites. With the HD upgrade, this also means new textures. Video updates will come in two different ways. For one, there will be new widescreen support, allowing various sliders for resolution choices. Cinematics will also see an overhaul, allowing these upgrades to be present at higher resolutions.
Other upgrades include Steam Achievements, controller support (with remappable buttons), and Japanese/English audio options. Most of the upgrades coming to Grandia HD Remaster will also be included with the Gandia II HD Remaster. All are pretty much the same, including the sprite and texture quality of life improvements.
Also, be on the lookout if you own the Grandia II Anniversary Edition. This will upgrade on Steam with the new title and additional features. You can view the official page here.
