There’s a good chance you’ve heard of the eerie and emotionally gripping A Plague Tale: Innocence. However, if you want to play it but haven’t yet had the chance, starting today you can give it a shot. The first chapter is now available for free on Steam, so if you want to try one of the best games out this year, this your opportunity.
A Plague Tale, however, is a dire story. Taking place in 1349 during a plague threatening France, you play as 15-year-old Amicia de Rune. She must take her little brother to safety, all the while dodging Inquisition soldiers and plague-carrying rats. Yes, lots and lots of rats. So many rats. The trailers for the game themselves don’t do the scurrying swarm justice. There are times you must use a torch to wade your way through a sea of rats. If you’re not a fan of rodents, A Plague Tale won’t change your mind for the better.
Getting the first chapter of the game is an easy process. You must head over to the store’s page on Steam. There, a small, blue button to the right will read Download Demo. Clicking on that will, naturally, download the demo, allowing you to play it and assuage your willingness to dance with rats. So many rats.
A tale of tails
A Plague Tale: Innocence was released earlier this year in May. We enjoyed our time with it, awarding the game a 7 out of 10 in our review. There were some issues, mostly about shallow gameplay and incomplete characters. However, a the game was still good, and certainly worth a look if you enjoy slower, narrative-driven adventure games.
“A Plague Tale: Innocence starts off with plenty of potential as a character-driven, stealth-based, supernatural horror adventure game,” Steven Wong wrote in his review. “However, the gameplay isn’t deep enough to keep things interesting. Although it does an impressive job with its setting and characters, they’re not enough to overcome the slow and predictable nature of its missions and some of the major plot elements.”
The game is also on sale this weekend at Steam. You can pick up A Plague Tale for 33% off the retail price, bringing it from $44.99 to $30.14 USD. Check out the Steam page for the demo and the discount.
