Publisher and developer GameTomo released Project Nimbus: Complete Edition today on Steam. Thankfully, the game is free for owners of the original edition of Project Nimbus. It is also currently discounted as part of the Steam Summer Sale.
Everything old is new again
Project Nimbus started with a Kickstarter and Steam Early Access back in 2014, becoming one of the few serviceable high-speed mecha games available on PC. This has always set it apart from the slower Mechwarrior games PC gamers are familiar with. Taking its cues from Ace Combat, Project Nimbus features a twenty-six mission campaign and a variety of “Battle Frames” to pilot. As you would expect from the Ace Combat series, it also features a political storyline involving a conflict between three future earth factions with indecipherable acronyms for names.
Unfortunately, the PC version of the game was left at the wayside of development after its initial release in 2017. This left it with decidedly indie looking visuals that certainly did not match the later games in the Ace Combat series. In the meantime, the developers focused on creating the updated Complete Edition for PS4 and Nintendo Switch.
Beam sabers now in HD
Project Nimbus: Complete Edition ports the game to Unreal Engine 4, giving it vastly improved visuals over the original. It isn’t up to the standards of Ace Combat 7, but it does have high-resolution textures, 21:9 Ultra-wide and 4K support, uncapped frame rate support, and detailed visual effect settings. With From Software still not making a new entry in the Armored Core series, this is the best looking fast action mecha game available on PC.
Extra game modes
The Complete Edition also includes survival and WARFRONT modes, which offer some extra play options to those who aren’t interested in the campaign. Survival mode pits you against endless waves of enemies, and shouldn’t be anything new to players of arcade-style action games. WARFRONT mode procedurally generates mission out of six different templates, such as Base Defense, Interception, and Assassination. Those who have spent hours tweaking their mecha in Armored Core may get something out of these extra modes, but as in Ace Combat, the campaign is the main attraction.
