Steep is a sandbox winter sports wonderland

Three free games to grab this weekend

This article is over 5 years old and may contain outdated information

Steep originally looked to be a spiritual successor to the popular SSX series. However, Ubisoft aimed for realism with Steep over arcade action, and the addition of wingsuits and paragliding helped set new boundaries. Steep also saw the addition of a shared-online world, something we’ve seen in other recent Ubisoft titles. So there is no doubt that Steep has been the premier extreme sports title from the last few years. If people are talking about Winter sports games, then they are certainly talking about Steep. Starting this weekend, players can grab the game for free via the Uplay launcher.

The free offering comes right after the release of Season 6: Carve the Curve, which promises new weekly and monthly challenges, as well as difficulty tweaks. Players who enjoy Steep for free have plenty of paid DLC offerings in the works, and Ubisoft seems apt to push live events for the game on a regular monthly schedule. The game will be available to download for free until May 21. This is definitely no offer to sleep on. For more information about the game, check out our Steep PC Technical review.

Guacamelee! served free

Juan Aguacate is an agave farmer turned luchador. Upon finding the legendary wrestling mask, he must unleash his inner strength in order to become the action hero he has long dreamed of becoming. Gucamelee! hints at the long history of pro-wrestling in Mexico, and its art style is colorfully reminiscient of classic Mexican folklore.

Guacamelee Super Turbo Championship Edition

The Humble Store is offering Gucamelee!: Super Turbo Championship Edition for free until May 19. The download is good for one Steam key for Windows. Anyone interested simply needs to sign up for the Humble Bundle newsletter. Those who are already signed up are still eligible to receive the free game.

Fans of Metroidvania-style platformers may not want to pass this up. Also, shared-screen co-op games are less and less common these days, so that is another element to look forward to in Gucamelee!

Stories Untold is an experimental adventure game

The Epic Mega Sale is serving up some pretty sweet deals. Amidst all of that is Stories Untold, a story-driven horror game from developer No Code and publisher Devolver Digital. The developer calls the game an experimental point-and-click style adventure, which allows the player to experience four unique storylines, almost as four separate short stories. I like the idea of a game being something like a short story anthology. This is something I would love to see more of, as a way to break up the grind of playing longer titles.

Stories Untold

Stories Untold is available for free through May 30, and is playable on Windows and Mac. For me, my first foray into point-and-click games was with Myst, a game that was bundled for free with our first home computer. I’ve had less experience with horror adventure games, so this offer sounds quite appealing.
