Overwatch has been popping off lately, especially with new announcements from BlizzCon 2018. So before you read the article title and come in here with some negativity, this warning is most likely a good thing and not just a weird oversight.
Blizzard has been warning fans all day that the next patch will be a big one, so much so that it requires a full reinstall. Thankfully, Blizzard isn’t known for their gigantic file sizes like other AAA companies. My current version of Overwatch is only 16.4 gigs, as opposed to a lot of modern day games that break 20 gigs easily.

On the forums, customer support rep Drakuloth stated, “The next major patch will have some pretty fundamental changes to the game client. The number of back-end changes we’re putting in is substantial enough that we can’t just patch over the current content efficiently.”
That means that Blizzard is attempting some pretty hefty overhauls to the client and overall structure of the game. So while I do understand that this is frustrating to those of us on metered connections, I’m going to have to volunteer you to take the hit so my Overwatch could potentially run better. Thanks! (I’m kidding of course.)
It’s Not Happening Anytime Soon
All that said, the next “big” patch doesn’t currently have a scheduled release date. Everything is a bit up in the air at the moment. It could be the patch with Ashe, or it could happen four months down the line. Thankfully, since Blizzard is warning us this far ahead of time, I’m positive they’ll send out another warning. You know, once the patch date is closer. When they do that, metered fans will then be able to plan out their downloads a bit more accurately, at the very least. So it shouldn’t have too much of a large-scale impact.
My only worry is that an update that changes anything within the framework of Overwatch could be super buggy. I certainly hope that they run the patch through the gauntlet of tests. Trying to fix it after it’s already gone out on players’ systems would become a pretty big problem.
