It’s 1924. Struggling with PTSD and addiction, investigator Edward Pierce finds himself without a case and at the end of his rope. However, that all changes the day he gets a knock on his door. A new case, one that will test his resolve and his sanity. The launch trailer for Cyanide’s Call of Cthulhu has arrived, and within, it offers a brief look at the history surrounding Pierce’s latest mystery.

By now, most of you should know about the Cthulhu mythos. H.P. Lovecraft’s work has been adopted by many games, shows, and films over the years. However, not many games seem to get it quite right. Bethesda and Head First Productions’ Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth gave it a respectable attempt, but it couldn’t quite capture the spirit.

This latest attempt by Cyanide, however, is looking promising. In the launch trailer, we find Sarah Hawkins, a woman whose family and home were engulfed by fire, in dire straights. We watch as she stumbles through a dark forest while shadowy figure chase after her in one scene. While in the next, we see her working on a painting, which offers the only clue to the case.

Fight The Darkness

Call of Cthulhu is an action RPG set on Darkwater (are there pirates?), an island near the coast of Boston. In the game, you explore seedy environments for clues on what happened to the Hawkins family. All the while, you must deal with shady locals while an unknown, eldritch horror slumbers.

The game is not only an adaptation of Lovecraft’s work, but that of a pen-and-paper RPG by Chaosium in 1981. Also, the trailer’s music was composed by Cristobal Tapia De Veer, who provided tracks for Black Mirror and The Girl With All The Gifts.

Call of Cthulhu writhes its way onto PC on October 30.
