Even though the Curse of the Vampire Coast DLC for Total War: Warhammer 2 won’t go live until November 8, Creative Assembly cannot help but showcase the four legendary lords joining the fray. One of these is a completely original creation — Cylostra Direfin, a Bretonnian opera singer who once sang at the court of kings. Direfin’s life abruptly ended at sea. Later, she reemerged as a specter of the deep.
Harkon, Noctilus, Aranessa, And Cylostra… Oh My!
The Curse of the Vampire Coast DLC also gave us a glimpse of Luthor Harkon. The vampire lord’s notoriety persisted in undeath as he sailed from his haven in the Vampire Coast of Lustria. Creative Assembly then mentioned that they would reveal three additional lords over time. This, naturally, led to a lot of speculation.
A week later and we have the full lineup. The following legendary lords will join Luthor Harkon:
- Count Noctilus – The commander of the Dreadfleet who’s made a bastion of the Galleon’s Graveyard. Noctilus sails aboard the Bloody Reaver, a gargantuan ship comprised of other wrecks.
- Aranessa Saltspite – A woman who’s part of the world of the living while also rumored to be the daughter of the Sea God, Manann. Aranessa commands her forces — comprised of the living, undead, and sea creatures — from the pirate island of Sartosa. Not to be confused with the other “salty” character — Warhammer: Vermintide’s Victor Saltzpyre.
- Cylostra Direfin – As mentioned above, Cylostra was a famous opera singer who met an untimely end only to become cursed. As a “super siren” — or Syreen as they’re called in Warhammer Fantasy Battles — she’s a pure magic user/caster legendary lord. Oh, and she can summon ghostly Bretonnian knights that have been damned.
Total War: Warhammer Player Base Reaction
These legendary lord announcements generated a lot of buzz among Total War and Warhammer fans. Many have responded to the news favorably. The reasons, we believe, are twofold.
First, players have been waiting for additional content for Total War: Warhammer 2. Naturally, the Curse of the Vampire Coast DLC should provide that for players.
Second, some of these lords and ladies are from more obscure or completely original backgrounds. Noctilus and Saltspite are both from the Games Workshop tabletop game Dreadfleet. Even though it’s still set in the Warhammer Fantasy Battles universe, Dreadfleet is considered a completely different game from the core Warhammer Fantasy tabletop experience. Meanwhile, Creative Assembly made Direfin from scratch. As expected, they also gave her a unique backstory and lore to fit in with the setting.
Likewise, we should note that the Vampire Coast itself isn’t a core faction in Warhammer Fantasy Battles. With new lords from other Games Workshop properties — and even one that’s totally original — many Total War fans believe that this will open the doors to fully flesh out the Warhammer world in the future.
Who knows, we might even see Kislev and Araby down the road? Some fans are even getting way ahead of themselves by thinking that Cathay, Nippon, and Ind will become playable factions in Total War: Warhammer one day.
