Dota 2 Gabe Newell Announcer

Gabe Newell pokes fun at Half-Life 3 as a Dota 2 mega kills announcer

This article is over 6 years old and may contain outdated information

Gabe Newell is the head honcho of Valve and one of the most well-known figures in the gaming industry. Newell, or “Gaben,” co-founded Valve and was responsible for one of the most revolutionary game franchises in history — Half-Life. Since then, we’ve seen Valve release a plethora of titles such as Left 4 Dead, Portal, the newly-announced Artifact CCG, and of course, Dota 2. We’ve also seen the company gain a stranglehold on the digital distribution market with Steam. Even though Newell still hasn’t announced any definitive Half-Life 3 news, at least we’ll get to hear him poke fun at the forever-in-limbo game as a mega kills announcer for Dota 2. Check out the video below.

Gabe Newell has a bit of fun with Half-Life 3 jokes

As you can see, Newell just delivers usually excited mega kills announcer yelps in a deadpan manner. “Hello, I’m Gabe Newell. You’ve just achieved first blood. Thanks and have fun.” This was followed by a straightforward: “Hello, this is Gabe Newell. Thanks for playing Dota 2. Double kill.”

Later on, the producers looked exasperated due to Newell’s inability to announce a triple kill. They implored Newell to simply say the word “three” — “three heroes,” “three” — which Newell just cannot do. He just asked: “But what’s my motivation?” Instead of mentioning a particular number, Newell just sidesteps the entire thing by saying: “You’ve killed more than two people… but less than four.”

We were laughing and grinding our teeth at the same time. Come on Gaben, just say “three” for once and watch those Half-Life 3 rumors explode around the internet.

If you found Newell’s take on mega-kill announcers entertaining, it’s free for owners of the TI8 Battle Pass in Dota 2. Plus, you’ll get some gems such as: “The entire team’s an ass, we won’t be working with them again” — referencing James “2GD” Harding, a Dota 2 event host who was fired because, according to Newell, he was “an ass.”
