343 Industries has confirmed that Halo: Infinite is without a doubt the next installation in the storied franchise. The news comes out of a recent Mixer broadcast, where 343 lead writer Jeff Easterling talked about where Halo: Infinite lands on the Halo spectrum.
“It is Halo 6,” Easterling said. “You should just consider it Halo 6. Don’t think of it as a weird prequel kind of thing. It’s the next story. It’s the next chapter in what is going on.”
Halo 5 ended with the Master Chief in dire straits. He had managed to fend off the Warden Eternal, only to be faced with a more dangerous — and sadly familiar — threat. While Halo: Infinite does look like a throwback to the original game, the story, at least, will continue where the Chief left off. And this time, he may not share the spotlight.
A one spartan show?
In June, 343 Industries studio head Chris Lee confirmed that Halo: Infinite will continue the Halo story. In a blog post, he said “the game will focus on the Master Chief and continue his saga after the events of Halo 5.”
This should be welcome news to those who wanted to experience Halo 5: Guardians through only the Chief’s eyes. Guardians has a split story, one which focused on the Chief and his Spartan-II allies, and another that starred Agent Lock, whose team hunted the green soldier through space.
Halo 5 wasn’t the first game in the series to cram two competing egos. In 2004, Halo 2 placed gamers not only in the Chief’s grunt-stomping space boots, but also in the role of the Sangheili warrior, The Arbiter.
Despite confirmation of the Chief being our main man, there are still questions abound concerning his prior antagonists. How much of a role, if any, will Locke’s Spartan-IV team have in the story of Halo: Infinite? We don’t expect 343 to sweep the team under the rug, but we are curious of their place within the next game. If anything, just leave us with Buck. You can keep the rest.
Halo: Infinite doesn’t have a release date yet, but we’re hoping to once again curb stomp some Covies sometime before the end of 2019.
