Destiny 2 Calus Leviathan Raid

Destiny 2: An updated guide on beating all the raid bosses

This article is over 6 years old and may contain outdated information

In a previous guide, we outlined how to complete the easier parts of Destiny 2’s Moments of Triumph. This time around, we’re going to look at the end-game namely the Raid and the Raid Lairs. We want to help you out when venturing into The Leviathan, Eater of Worlds, and Spire of Stars. It should be noted that only a select number of players have completed these activities.  For instance, on PS4, roughly 36 percent completed the Normal Leviathan Raid. Meanwhile, less than 25% found success for Prestige Mode. So if you want your Destiny 2 Moments of Triumph done, a little bit of challenging oneself is in store. Since, at the moment, only the Normal Mode completions for these activities are required, we’ll deal with those mechanics instead of Prestige Mode.

Please note that some gameplay videos are for the PS4 version of the game. The system may be different, but the mechanics remain the same for PC. The fights might actually be easier on PC due to no input lag and better framerates. With that being said, here’s our updated guide for all boss fights in Destiny 2’s Raid and Raid Lairs.

Destiny 2 – The Leviathan Raid Guide

The Leviathan was the first raid released for Destiny 2. It was the end-game PvE activity for the Vanilla or base game. It has four encounters and several secret chests. There is only one actual boss fight and that’s Emperor Calus who’s sitting on his throne. That video above courtesy of KackisHD should give you a general idea of the layout.

The fight consists of two “areas” — the Throne Room, and the Shadow Realm. You’ll want to split up your team with those who wish to do the Throne Room and those who wish to do the Shadow Realm.  Those in the Throne Room have it slightly easier. All they need to do is kill mobs. Ideally, you’ll want classes that have supers that can clear mobs since there will be a lot of them as the fight goes on. They also need to punch the Psion plate symbol that gets called out.

The Shadow Realm players cross-shoot the psions and the projections. They also need to avoid ramps so they don’t fly off into Calus’ mouth. Once they get to the end, they need to shoot skulls that are flying out to increase the damage multiplier. In order to get more skulls to spawn, have one player in the Throne Room kill themselves (shoot himself with a rocket or stand in the fire). That’s because the number of spawning skulls is related to the ratio of people inside the Shadow Realm versus the Throne Room.

Killing Calus

Once everyone is back in the Throne Room, you’ll want the team to huddle together near the top right plate (Sun), and then do a countdown to jump on top of it and start the DPS phase. Start shooting the boss, but when you see him aiming at you or fire erupting at your feet, it’s time to jump out and move to the next plate. You’ll want to do a counter-clockwise rotation for all the plates — top right, bottom right, bottom left, top left.

If you do the player suicide trick above, you can x90 to x100 damage multiplier. If you do enough damage, Calus will begin his last stand by raising his fists. You’ll need to pump as much damage as you can into him until he crackles and explodes. If not, you’ll need to repeat the same mechanics from the previous phase. The only major change is that there are holes in the Shadow Realm area.

Your top option for doing the most damage is The Rat King as seen in the video above from Indica. The more players have it equipped, the more damage each gun can do. Otherwise, you can use the new Whisper of the Worm exotic sniper rifle or a plethora of rocket launchers. Be sure to have a Warlock wear Lunafaction Boots so that you no longer need to reload while standing on a Rift.

Destiny 2: Curse of Osiris – Eater of Worlds Lair Guide

Eater of Worlds is one of the easiest endgame PvE activities in Destiny 2. That’s because the boss, Argos, is quite a chump. He has a shield that can be broken by shooting elemental clouds with charged craniums/skulls. Once broken, he pretty much just has his crit spot facing you that you can hit it easily enough.

Split up the team into three groups of two per area (Void, Arc, Solar areas). Each area will have one defender and one runner. Defenders will pick up skulls and charge them at the DPS area where Argos will be facing towards during the DPS phase. Runners will adjust based on the elements that are needed.

Let’s say the DPS area is at Void and you have 2 Arc and 1 Solar cloud. That means all defenders will charge their craniums at the Void area. Meanwhile, two runners charge at Arc, and the other runner charges at Solar. To make things easier, have one Hunter play as a Nightstalker with Orpheus Rigs, tethering adds to generate orbs. Take extra care not to shoot the adds he has tethered as that might kill them all and waste his super.

Killing Argos

When everyone is ready and has brought their charged craniums, break his shield and start wailing away on him. If your Nightstalker generated plenty of orbs, you can spam your supers again and again. If not, your ideal weapons would be Curtain Call rocket launchers if standing on a Warlock Rift. You can also use the Whisper of the Worm, however, its White Nail perk won’t work if you’re standing in the Rift.

Argos will then spawn platforms surrounding him and you’ll need to shoot his various body parts. You’ll want to stack everyone on a specific side hitting his head first and then the corresponding arm for that side. Taking out two body parts prevents a wipe. Rinse and repeat until Argos is dead.

Destiny 2: Warmind – Spire of Stars Lair Guide

Spire of Stars is generally harder than Eater of Worlds due to tighter mechanics for the Valus Ca’uor boss fight. Everyone needs to be on-point and quite speedy to avoid a wipe. Assign plate areas for four teammates while the remaining two stay in the middle as floaters. Just number the plates from 1-4 going from left to right. These players need to be on their plates to create an elevator/teleport beam that whisks a player to space, allowing him to scout for ships and blow them up. You also need to do a little ball passing in between.

Once the fight starts, clear out those adds until “Valus Ca’uor is consumed by corruption,” or when he’s “pooping” from the looks of it. Pass the ball to all teammates in sequence to avoid a player’s death, and then throw it at him to end his “pooping” phase.

Gladiators will then spawn from dropships on those plates, so cooperate with teammates to help take them out. At the same time, three players will have “Superior Retainer,” a buff which allows them to go up the beam to space. The two floaters are your priorities to call this out if they have it. If they don’t, plates 2 or 3, the ones closer to the middle, will do it. The “Retained” player then goes up to scout the ships that need to be destroyed represented by their symbols — left/square, middle/circle, right/triangle.

Two balls will then spawn which the other players need to pick up, charge at the smoke clouds near the boss, and then throw at the corresponding side’s doors. You’ll see that this worked if the weapon systems are armed. Once more, send the “Retained” player to space to blow up the ships.

You can send the same player to space to do everything, no need to send two at the same time. Also, those going up would want to do a countdown when players need to step on plates to ensure that everyone is on the same page.

Killing Valus Ca’uor

Once the two ships have been blown up, five players will need to head to the glass window behind the boss. The remaining player will then collect the balls that land on the plates. He needs to charge these at the smoke, and then throw them to his teammates. His teammates then play “hot potato” by passing the balls around. Once all three balls are charged, the Calus robot floats in the air. You can then throw those balls at him to break Valus Ca’uor’s shield.

Although the mechanics to get to the DPS phase might seem complicated, the actual DPS phase itself is fairly simple. Your Hunters should be Arcstriders with Raider Flux. Your Titans should be Sunbreakers with Synthoceps. And finally, your Warlocks can be Voidwalkers with Lunafaction Boots or Stormcallers with Crown of Tempests. Use those supers liberally on Valus Ca’uor for the entirety of the DPS phase. If you have masterwork armor, these definitely help in mitigating damage. You can also choose to run with Wardcliff Coils, Whisper of the Worm, Rat King, and other loadouts to do damage. Lastly, don’t forget to wear your raid class item that corresponds to your subclass element for an additional 25 percent damage.

Rinse and repeat the above process until Valus Ca’uor enters his last stand. You’ll need to pick up the balls that fly out around the room, charge it up to 7 greed or so, and then throw them at the boss to do massive damage. If you’ve already thrown your ball, then just keep shooting at him.
