Fortnite‘s journey from an early access nonstarter to the biggest game in the world happened fast. Every update pushed by developer Epic Games has built upon a solid battle royale framework, turning the free-to-play shooter into an entertaining, ever-changing behemoth. And with the recent launch of Fortnite season 5, the game’s getting even better.
Season five adds new map locations and a golf kart vehicle alongside various gameplay tweaks. But most interestingly is the addition of rifts. In version 5.0, unstable rifts now spawn at different points on the maps. Entering one spits players out at a different location, including the new desert biome in the southeast part of the map that replaces Moisty Mire.
The All Terrain Kart allows for added mobility when outrunning the Storm. According to the version 5.0 patch notes, the Kart can carry an entire squad at once, drift for speed boosts, and be used as an impromptu trampoline thanks to its bouncy roof.
The marriage of gameplay tweaks and new content speaks to Fortnite‘s ever-evolving identity. Although few games manage to rebrand and stay relevant, Epic Games’ battle royale shooter seems to revel in change. Season 5’s time-traveling tint has enough content to keep diehard fans happy while building narrative bricks in the background. What’s coming to Fortnite over the coming months remains to be seen, but the 5.0 update (and rocket-launching event before it) point to big events on the horizon.
