VRChat issues security alert – Players with altered versions will be banned

This article is over 6 years old and may contain outdated information

VRChat‘s following has rocketed since December as more VR and non-VR gamers discover its complete madness which you will either love or loathe. The rise in popularity has made it a security target and the VRChat developers have issued a warning today regarding unofficial downloads which may be installing malware on PCs.

The statement from the developers reads:

We’d like to advise the entire community that using modified versions of VRChat obtained outside of our official distribution platforms may be installing malware on your computer. Secure locations to download VRChat are via our Steam page and our website[www.vrchat.com]. Also, as a reminder, users found using altered versions of the client will be permanently banned from our service. If you know of users using one of these clients, you may want to warn them of the risks.

Please be patient with us (and our response times!) while we continue to work hard on major updates to provide increased security, more reliable servers and an overall improved VRChat. A patch went out this week and we’ll have another one out shortly.

We’d also like to thank our dedicated community for their feedback, detailed reports and other helpful efforts that go toward making VRChat a better experience for everyone. We do it all for you

I’m not sure why anyone would pick it up from anywhere other than Steam but this warning should be taken seriously. With more than two million people now romping around in the game/chat room it’s going to be an easy target for unscrupulous individuals.
