Razer’s affordable HDK 2 VR headset matches Vive and Rift specs

Razer are pushing to undercut the competition and bring more PC gamers into the VR fold.

In July Razer will be shipping the OSVR HDK 2 VR headset which comes with a price tag of $399 with a display that matches the HTC Vive and Oculus. The new headset comes with a resolution of 2,160 x 1,200 matching the Rift and Vive,  It also features a dual-OLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate, low persistence, and “IQE (Image Quality Enhancer) technology for a reduced screen door effect”. That alone is worth taking note of.

“The HDK 2 allows us to meet the needs of VR fans and gamers and provide developers with affordable open-source hardware to innovate with.” Says Christopher Mitchell, OSVR Lead, Razer. “With the HDK 2 being able to deliver a visual experience on par with industry leaders, we will now be able to represent hardware agnostic VR media and games in all their glory for future headsets to adopt through the open source ecosystem.”

Razer are really aiming at enthusiasts and not the retail market like their competitors, it is touted as a development kit. Check the chart below to see how it stacks up because it’s looking great at that $399 price.
