2016 has just started and the VR hype is already underway. Today Nvidia launched what they are calling the “GTX VR Ready program” which they hope will be a guide to help PC gamers get to grips with the requirements.
If VR does take off, then Nvidia will be wanting to shift as many high-end GPUs as possible. The minimum GTX GPU Nvidia is recommending will be the GTX 970. Anything above the 970, including the GTX 980, GTX 980 Ti and TITAN X will do the trick.
Nvidia are going to be utilising the “GeForce GTX VR Ready” badge on systems and graphics cards from now on. All the main manufacturers (see list) have partnered with Nvidia to carry this new stamp.
There’s nothing new with these recommended specs, they’re the same specs already recommended by Oculus back in May 2015 :
- NVIDIA GTX 970 / AMD 290 equivalent or greater.
- Intel i5-4590 equivalent or greater.
- 8GB+ RAM.
- Compatible HDMI 1.3 video output.
- 2x USB 3.0 ports.
- Windows 7 SP1 or newer.
Think of this new Nvidia initiative as a marketing exercise to encourage upgrades in the hope that VR takes off this time. We’ve said it a thousand times here on PC Invasion, do not jump into VR as soon as it launches. Wait until the hardware has been fully tested and there’s decent games that play well with all the current limitations of VR.
