No matter what your opinion is of the Star Citizen project, the crowdfunding has proved highly successful as a new milestone is reached today.
Earlier this evening the Start Citizen site finally ticked over the 1 million backers mark. These 1 million gamers have helped bring the funding figure to over $92,367,140.
Despite all the doubts, threats of legal action, mud slinging, discussion of refunds, concern about development speed, and well the list goes on, these special events such as CitizenCon put on by Chris Roberts are still capturing the imagination of gamers.
This past weekend’s CitizenCon will have helped push backer numbers up because what’s on show always looks reasonably impressive, and although these are simply special demo scenarios, it’s always enough to bring more backers in. The Squadron 42 reveal will also have been a big pull for space sim fans looking for anything that resembles a decent looking space game. Let’s not forget that impressive cast, even if I still think it’s complete overkill and isn’t needed.
It’s good news for Roberts who will be keen to keep the money coming in but there’s still a long way to go before anything of any real substance appears. Just keep that in mind if you’re thinking about chipping in.
We have also updated our Star Citizen Development/Event timeline to reflect all these recent events.
