Vogel slap is just about ready to launch The Flock on Steam and the Humble Store, in fact it’s arriving on 21 August.

Last month Vogelsap revealed the rather unusual feature where the game would eventually become unplayable with a system they call “population”. The population counter will start at a large 215,358,979 and will tick down to zero and at that point the game will no longer be on sale.

Once the zero mark is hit, the game will enter a final phase which they say will have a “climatic finale”. So how did they come up with the number of  215,358,979? Vogelsap explain in their FAQ:

215.358.979 Flock lives . This takes into account the optimal experience we intend to deliver, the lore, the average play time, amount of deaths, refunders, regular griefers, the sales we wish to make and the time we want the game to be active so everyone can take the time to enjoy the game.

The game will be on sale for $16,99/€16,99 when in launches and they are also giving a way an extra buddy-key to anyone who purchases the game during launch week.

The concept is an interesting one and as we mentioned previously and it’s a shrewd move in a world where dozens of games are released on Steam every week.

You can find out more details about The Flock over on the official website which will also feature the countdown clock which is something you’ll want to keep an eye on should you take the plunge.
