Dead Island 2 is no longer being developed by Yager who previously worked on Spec Ops: The Line. A statement  released by the publisher which reads:
With Dead Island 2, Deep Silver has always been dedicated to delivering the sequel that Dead Island fans deserve. After careful consideration, today we announce the decision to part ways with development partner YAGER. We will continue working towards bringing our vision of Dead Island 2 to life, and we will share further information at a later stage.
It’s not great news and it sounds like they’re going to be taking a hard look at the game’s direction before making any further date commitments.
Back in April they released a similar statement announcing the game’s delay until 2016 adding that wanted to create a Dead Island game that “takes Dead Island to the next level”. Yager’s work was obviously not “next level” enough which will disappoint fans eagerly  awaiting more news on a release date.
When will it come out? A lot depends on whether Yager’s work gets thrown out and they start over. That would be drastic and push the game back even further. Let’s hope there’s a solid contingency plan in place and Dead Island doesn’t turn into another dead franchise.
