Nvidia’s latest graphics card is $1,000

This article is over 12 years old and may contain outdated information

Do you have $1,000 USD laying around your house in loose change? If you do, will you be spending it on a graphics card for your PC? No, I wouldn’t be doing that with a spare $1,000 either. But some people might; and they can buy Nvidia’s new GeForce GTX 690.
Yes, it may cost more than the price of a pretty hefty PC all on its own, but it also has the power of two 28nm GK104 Kepler chips, linked together by a PCIe 3.0 switch. I … don’t actually have any clear idea what that means, but it no doubt ensures that this graphics card can show you all the polygons in the universe. Maybe.
Nvidia claims it makes the single GTX 690 “almost identical” in performance to two GTX 680s, and also notes that it’s probably “not a graphics card for everyone”. Well, quite.
