Worlds Inc. are suing Activision Blizzard over supposed patent infringements. “Fair compensation” is being claimed over the means of online player-to-player interaction in games such as World of Warcraft and Call of Duty.
“A system and method for enabling users to interact in a virtual space,” is what Worlds Inc. is claiming has been violated by Activision Blizzard.
Of course, whenever you hear these kinds of stories, the immediate reaction is to laugh it off as an opportunistic shot in the dark. However, in 2012, Worlds Inc. get settle with NCSoft over MMO City of Heroes over similar patent claims.
“Technologies created by Worlds have helped the businesses of virtual worlds gaming and the sale of virtual goods to grow into a multi-billion dollar industry,” said Worlds CEO Thom Kidrin. “While we are pleased to see that the gaming industry and its rapidly growing customer base have enthusiastically embraced our patented technologies, we deserve fair compensation for their use.”
