Last week, we asked the question “Has Nvidia’s response to the GTX 970 VRAM issue been adequate?” to see how the PC community felt about the company’s recent behaviour. The results could be summarised by the phrase “not even close.”
A brief reminder of the issue in question. Nvidia’s GTX 970 cards were marketed with 4GB of VRAM. However, it subsequently emerged that the upper 512MB is segmented and does not perform at all well. Effectively, once the GTX 970 starts using more than 3.5GB of VRAM in a game, it begins to struggle.
Nvidia acknowledged this in a rather strange apology, which referred to the segmented VRAM as a “feature” of the card. A feature they hadn’t told anybody about.
We had more than one thousand votes on our poll. Just 7% of people said “Yes. I accept their explanation and apology.” Another 29% felt fairly unimpressed by Nvidia’s response, but were still “happy with the price/performance of the 970.”
A combined 64% of our readers were not at all impressed by Nvidia’s PR efforts and felt that a full/partial refund (31%) or free compensatory GPU upgrade (33%) should have been forthcoming. That latter 33% also believed that Nvidia “completely misled people” over the GTX 970 specs.
Here are the final poll results. We’ll have a new one up on a different (probably GDC related!) issue later today.
