How to get out of Jail in Dragon’s Dogma 2

This time try to stay out, will you?

In Dragon’s Dogma 2, Gaol means prison, or “jail.” If you are to commit misdeeds or violent crimes in any enforced area, you may find yourself hunted down by guards. Upon what would otherwise be death, you are detained and thrown in Gaol. There are a few ways to get out.

How to escape Vernworth Jail in Dragon’s Dogma 2

Vernworth, naturally, has a Gaol that many players will find themselves locked in, especially those struggling with the Disa’s Plot quest. Don’t worry, it’s rather easy to escape, provided you happen to have a key, be it proper or makeshift. But if you don’t have a key, then you’ll have to pay a handsome bribe.

Upon waking up in Vernworth Gaol, your first thoughts will be of escape. Your items will be stripped from you, and you’ll be left in rags. Here is how to get out.

Paying a bribe

A couple of Guardsmen will be on watch in the Vernworth Gaol. You can hail them as they pass.

They’ll offer your freedom upon a bribe, which turns out to be an extortionate fee. The bribe is always relative, so you will always have enough to pay it, it’ll just cut a huge wedge into your savings.

It’ll be well worth getting a Gaol Key before doing anything stupid in the city.

Escaping Vernworth Jail

There are two escape routes, each one depending on what kind of Key you have.

If you have a Gaol Key, you can leave your cell, head over to the northern side of the room, and open two other sets of doors. You’ll be spat out outside, without having to worry about any guards. You’ll get your stuff back immediately upon leaving.

If you only have the Makeshift Gaol Key, then your journey will be only a little more arduous. The Makeshift Gaol Key can be used once, to open your cell. Walk to the southern side of the room and walk up the steps.

Ahead will be the Gaoler’s Room, so take the left and follow it around. To the right now should be a staircase leading up a tower. If you follow the tower up, you’ll be exiting the Vernworth Gaol and entering the castle grounds, where you’ll get all your stuff back.

I’m unsure if my experience in Vernworth Gaol was an anomaly but the guards did not care that I escaped at all. I exited my cell and walked right up to them. They did nothing. I’m unsure if this is a bug or a purposeful design choice, but it’s certainly strange.

How to get a Jail Key in Dragon’s Dogma 2

There are two types of Gaol Keys that you can find. One proper, and one Makeshift.

You can purchase a Makeshift Gaol Key from Dudley in Melve. This can only be used once, but it’s all you need for a Gaol escape. If you’re already past Melve, then an Oxcart only costs 100 Gold to travel back from Venworth. The Makeshift Key will cost you 3,000 Gold, though.

As the story progresses, you will be given a Gaol Key from Captain Brant. This key can be used indefinitely. Following the story should be the first thing you do in Venworth, as it really won’t be long before you can get the Gaol Key of Brant. Then, you can escape prison all you want.

Escaping Gaol in Dragon’s Dogma 2 isn’t all that hard, but only for those prepared. It’ll set you back at least 3,000 Gold almost every time, so just don’t end up in Gaol.
